Indonesia Millennial and Gen Z Report 2027 Launched Today

The Indonesia Millennial and Gen Z Report (IMGR) 2027 has been officially launched by IDN Research Institute, highlighting how Indonesia’s Millennials and Gen Z are adapting to economic pressures, technological advancements, and increasingly complex social dynamics.
The research findings reveal that young Indonesians are becoming more selective in managing their finances, diversifying their income streams, and redefining stability beyond relying on a single job in order to navigate ongoing economic uncertainty.
IMGR 2027 employs a mixed-method research approach involving hundreds of respondents to provide a comprehensive view of how Millennials and Gen Z continue to learn, adapt, and develop new life strategies in the digital era.
Jakarta, June 17, 2026 — The Indonesia Millennial & Gen Z Report (IMGR) 2027 was officially launched during the opening session of Indonesia Summit 2026 at The Tribrata, Jakarta. Published annually by IDN Research Institute, the report provides in-depth insights into how Indonesia's Millennial and Gen Z generations are navigating increasingly complex economic, social, and technological challenges. For readers who wish to explore the complete findings, the full IMGR 2027 report can be accessed on this page.
The year 2026 has been marked by growing economic pressures, workplace shifts driven by technological advancement, and various uncertainties affecting daily life. Against this backdrop, IMGR 2027 identifies one consistent theme across multiple aspects of young Indonesians' lives: adaptation.
Rather than viewing change as a barrier, Millennials and Gen Z are developing new strategies to remain resilient and continue progressing. From managing finances and building careers to redefining life priorities, these generations demonstrate an ongoing ability to adjust to realities that are evolving faster than ever before.

William Utomo, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of IDN, stated: "Millennials and Gen Z are generations that have grown up in an era of constant change. They are not only learning how to navigate uncertainty but are also transforming it into a strategy for moving forward. Through IMGR 2027, we aim to provide a deeper understanding of how Indonesia's young generations are adapting, enabling business leaders, policymakers, and institutions to make more relevant and impactful decisions."
According to the report's findings, economic pressures have encouraged Millennials and Gen Z to become increasingly selective in managing their spending and financial priorities. Purchasing decisions are no longer driven solely by desire, but are increasingly influenced by perceived value, relevance, and long-term benefits.
The report also reveals that income diversification is becoming an essential life strategy among young Indonesians. Many Millennials and Gen Z are developing additional income streams to strengthen their financial resilience amid dynamic economic conditions. This adaptation reflects a shift in how stability is perceived, with financial security no longer relying on a single job or a single source of income.
In the workplace, rapid advancements in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are motivating young generations to continuously acquire new skills. Adaptability, lifelong learning, and readiness for change have become critical factors in shaping their career paths. IMGR 2027 highlights that adapting to change is no longer optional—it is necessary to remain relevant in the future economy.
Beyond economics and employment, the report explores shifts in media consumption, cultural identity formation, and how Millennials and Gen Z express their views on social and national issues. Together, these developments demonstrate how young Indonesians are continuously evolving, adapting, and creating new meaning in an increasingly dynamic world.

Novita Santoso, Research Lead at IDN Research Institute, added: "IMGR 2027 began with a critical finding: in 2025, Indonesia's middle class declined by 1.2 million people, while the aspiring middle class grew by 4.5 million. This structural shift was partly sustained by households drawing down savings to meet basic needs. In response to these pressures, Millennials and Gen Z are not waiting for institutions to adapt on their behalf—they are building their own infrastructure of adaptation. This includes diversifying income streams, participating in community-driven markets that operate without investors or formal platforms, and redefining how they contribute to society through giving and collective action. The behavior of these generations has already changed. Many institutions have not, and continue to interpret young Indonesians using outdated frameworks from five years ago. The real question is not whether businesses and governments understand these generations, but how long they can continue relying on old models before markets, trust, and legitimacy shift toward those who understand them more accurately."
IMGR 2027 employs a mixed-method research approach, combining quantitative surveys, in-depth interviews, and triangulation with various national and global data sources. The study involved 628 Millennial and Gen Z respondents from across Indonesia and was further strengthened through expert interviews and analysis of broader economic and social trends.
With its comprehensive perspective, IMGR 2027 serves not only as a research report but also as a strategic guide for understanding how Indonesia's young generations continue to move forward, adapt, and build new life strategies in an increasingly uncertain world. Despite the challenges they face, the report highlights the optimism, resilience, and adaptive capacity that will help shape Indonesia's future.
